A woman walks through the grand hall of Grand Central Station in New York City.

Growing up, I often pored over old black-and-white photographs of the women in my clan walking the streets of Bogotá, Colombia, in the 1950s. What stood out to me in these portraits, even as a child, was that these women were always accompanied by a man in public spaces, their hands bound to his arm for both protection and dependency.

I want to bring your attention to the fact that the Greek Kore and the Mayan woman sculptures featured in this post are "representations" of women, memorialized thousands of years later.

Woman with a Cellphone is not a representation. It is a document of a real woman of our time, one with a name, and a unique being and story that remain unknown to us. She walks alone, free from the misplaced presence of a man by her side, self-possessed as she navigates a world still shaped by the remnants of patriarchal structures. The man in the foreground embodies the systemic obstacles she continues to confront.

Yet, with poise and purpose, even in the face of uncertainty, Woman with a Cellphone carves her own path into the undiscovered horizon—her future, her autonomy, her story, and above all, her agency.
