Aspen Meditations
Primal portraits of aspen tree bark in winter, meditated through my lens in a serene aspen grove nestled eighteen miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, during a spiritual quest through the American Southwest.
I do not know why I was drawn to the aspen. After more than a decade in New York, I embarked on a sabbatical to the desert. One winter morning in 2006, I woke up with tears on my face, and for an entire month, those tears would come every waking hour. It was in this state that I first encountered these trees while driving along US-180, their numberless silhouettes in the snow-filled landscape instilling solace and peacefulness in me in a way I still can't fully explain. Their presence that day imbued their elemental spirit into my own. The experience of taking their portraits, and sitting lotus-like before the prints since then, continues to invoke in me tranquility, meditative states, spiritual awakenings, and a profound reconnection with nature.
When I first took their portraits in 2006, I knew nothing of their ancient roots. Nor did I know any more when I returned to the same grove in 2015 and took the portraits in this collection. It wasn’t until the summer of 2023, while preparing these photographs, that I learned the depth of their story.
Single aspen trees can live for over a century, but their interconnected root systems, all linked to a single parent, can live for up to ten thousand years. One such colony, called Pando, has thrived for over eighty thousand years in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah—an aspen colony nearly as old as our species.

About Editions
In art collecting, "editions" refer to a limited number of prints produced from a single original artwork. Understanding the distinction between rare and limited editions is crucial for collectors, as it directly impacts the value and rarity of each print.
Rare Editions
Rare editions are the most exclusive, with very few prints available.
Typical Range: In my work, rare editions consist of 3 prints, plus 1 Artist's Proof held in reserved for legacy purposes.
Value: Due to their extreme rarity, these prints are highly sought after and hold significant value for collectors.
Numbering: Each rare edition print is individually numbered and signed by the artist.
Limited Editions
Limited editions refer to a fixed number of prints produced from a single image.
Typical Range: Limited editions in my work range from 9 prints for smaller sizes to a rare edition of 3 for larger sizes.
Value: While more accessible than rare editions, limited editions still offer exclusivity.
Numbering: Each limited edition print is numbered and signed by the artist.
Exclusivity
Once an edition is sold out, no additional prints will be produced, ensuring the lasting value and exclusivity of each artwork.
