A woman walks across Grand Central Station, New York City, 2019. Her coat is tied with a simple bow at the belt, perhaps lunch in the plastic bag, hair as red as copper, and a bag with printed flower motifs tucked under her arm. There's something about women in New York—always carrying bags so large, as if they’re moving through life with everything they own. I used to tease an ex-partner, saying she was carrying a trunk, not a bag like the one pictured here. Her eyeglasses, her chain, her gait, slightly off-balance. Her expression is a lifetime in the making. Above her, elongated figures loom, as if from a shared surrealist memory she left behind. The narrow patch of mixed colors ahead, still waiting for her steps, remains unknown. The color blocks compress around her, yet she keeps walking forward. There is so much of each of us in her. If you’ve reached a certain age—gathered a certain litany of experiences, of falls and awakenings, and yet continue to push through every day—you might recognize the uncertainty she carries, the not knowing what tomorrow holds. The relentless intention of her lifeforce.
