This candid portrait, taken at Grand Central Station in New York City, brings back memories of women walking away: from friends I was never to see again when our paths unintentionally diverged, to a dear friend I lost to cancer, whose life remains luminous in my memory, to the simple exchange of "see you later" each morning as my wife and I parted ways for the day. Many times I stood there, dumbfounded by my luck, watching her walk away. And then there are the everyday women, the women in my clan, who quietly carve out paths for themselves and, against all odds, gently stride ahead.

There’s an understated effortlessness to her walk, and in this photograph, perhaps I’ve managed to imbue the painterly aura I was striving for. It gives me a sense of someone fading from view, disappearing into a golden ether. What’s in her bag? Where is she going? How fair her walk.
