A man walks through the grand hall at Grand Central Station, New York City.

If you've ever had the chance to read musings from centuries past—say the 9th century—or to hear music from earlier eras like Bach, and then fast-forward to our modern pace, where you can skim through five different things on your phone in under five minutes (news, weather, social media, email), it becomes glaringly clear: the speed of the contemporary human experience is pushing our capacity to process life’s morsels. We were designed for small, digestible moments, and yet today we are inundated with rapid-fire information and fleeting impressions.

This thought occupies me often. As a photographer, I roam the streets daily, with what feels like an extra eye that hovers above my own, noticing things. Have you any idea how hard it is to find a person today without a cell phone in their hand, without that tether to distraction? It’s rare to catch someone in the act of true thought, or even in a pensive mood.

Yes, the reference is Rodin. But Rodin is a representation of a generic human being. This is a man with a yellow tie, head bowed in genuine thought, a man with a name, a real life. He is split—perhaps like many of us—trying to see himself from above and below, making sense of the madness swirling around him. Or maybe he's just contemplating whether to have that tuna Niçoise salad for lunch again today. But he's thinking, in a way that is entirely his own, not a representation of thought but the real thing. And that’s what drew me to him.
