A woman walks through the great hall at Grand Central Station, New York City, 2019.

There’s a certain walk older, lonely people carry in this urban landscape of New York. A certain gait. A downward tilt of the head. A way of holding bags that seem to carry an emptiness in the air around them. In a city like this, with its vertiginous pace, loneliness often renders a person impeccably invisible. I think I was drawn to photograph this woman as a way of reminding myself that she isn’t invisible. Loneliness isn’t invisible. The onus is on those who fail to see.

I come from a place where elders are the center of the world. In my clan, visiting the elders was a regular part of life as a teenager, and they would feed you sweet snacks or small meals—made with warmth and a wink, not wealth. This is not that place. But here she is. Visible to me. Today. Of course, I might be projecting a little bit of Eleanor Rigby all over the scene, but let me not digress.

What I didn’t realize at the time was how much I was unconsciously trying to give her beauty and warmth in the image. Now, as I look at the photograph, there’s something ether-like in it.
