Crossroad
Crossroad
A man walks in Grand Central Station, New York City, 2019.
I first encountered Giacometti's Walking Man during a college class on European history. Years later, I saw the sculpture in person at a retrospective at MoMA, arriving just an hour before the exhibition closed. My singular mission was to see Walking Man. I moved around it at a glacial pace, as Jerry Saltz once described how artists truly see artwork—pulling back to take in the impressionistic quality, then leaning in so close that I could examine the rectangular, sculptural brushstrokes made by Giacometti's fingers. A lone guard began inching closer, concerned by my focused intensity, but my smile eventually put him at ease. In that ashen bronze, I saw not just a man walking but a figure emerging from the fog of war—stepping out of Dresden, out of the Holocaust, out of the male-made wreckage of history.
I am deeply and obsessively drawn to the men and women of today as they walk the streets. With my camera and lens, this man in the photograph is not a symbol, an abstraction, or a representational figure; he is a real person with a name, a life, a story. Looking closer, I realize that part of the painterly quality I aimed to capture here was to render the face as that of an unknown figure. And yet, his stride—the forward motion of his body—tells a more universal story, echoing Walking Man but grounded in the present.
I remember photographing fashion shows, learning to anticipate that brief, precise moment when a model's foot would shift forward into the next step. That awareness of movement—the sense of motion about to happen—became part of my photography, and it's here in this man's stride. A thousand years from now, a viewer might look at this photograph and wonder: Who was this man in the red tie, carrying this small brown bag in his left hand, walking through this moment in time? Just as we look back at men in heavy armor walking into battle centuries ago, future generations might ask, "Where is this man today? Where will he be a thousand years from now? What will he wear, what will he do, and how will he see himself? Will he still be here?

Passenger
This series features candid photographic portraits capturing individuals walking through Grand Central Station, New York City.
Initially, the work emerged from a purely aesthetic exploration—an attempt to document how the soft, natural light in Grand Central Station shapes and transforms the impressions of body and facial expressions. I aimed to calibrate both camera and lens to evoke the ether-like, ephemeral qualities of impressionism, experimenting with ways to achieve this effect through post-production recoloring.
However, as primary source documents, these images also engage with broader inquiries into socioeconomic class, culture, power, and agency. As a Latin American immigrant, I have been acutely aware of how public spaces impose invisible, repressive boundaries that dictate who is allowed access, and under what conditions. In the U.S., your identity—where you come from, what you look like—shapes your access to public spaces, inclusion, and opportunities for power, knowledge, and survival. This series is a snapshot of "who" has access to this colossal hall on an ordinary day, but it also highlights "who" is missing, those excluded by circumstances of race, class, or status.
I am deeply committed to documenting individuals in public spaces, creating site-specific visual ethnographies that can speak to future generations about who we were in this moment of history. My fascination with ancient Maya, Greek, and Egyptian sculpture and painting informs this investigation. Just as these cultures captured the essence of their time, I strive to portray the individuals of my era—though my tools are photographic, capturing not only their physical presence but also a glimpse into their psyche.
Recognizing that true objectivity is impossible, I used protocols inspired by Merce Cunningham's chance methods in dance choreography and randomized procedures from archaeological excavations to maximize any attempt at neutrality. This approach allowed for a more balanced representation of those who crossed my path in Grand Central Station, creating a more authentic visual ethnography of this public space.
EDITIONS
For those new to the world of art collecting, the term "editions" refers to the number of copies produced from a single original piece of artwork. Editions help ensure the exclusivity and value of each print. Understanding the difference between limited and rare editions is crucial for collectors.
In all of my fine art photography, I am committed to offering rare editions to ensure exclusivity and high value for collectors. Each artwork is produced in extremely limited quantities, with only 3 prints available for the larger size and 5 for the smaller size. Some series are even more exclusive, offered in only one size with an edition of 3
RARE EDITION
Definition: A rare edition is even more exclusive than a limited edition, implying extreme scarcity with very few prints available.
Typical Range: Rare editions typically include fewer than five prints and sometimes might even be a single print.
Value: Due to their extreme rarity, these prints are highly valuable and sought after by collectors.
Numbering: Similar to limited editions, rare editions are also numbered and usually signed by the artist.
LIMITED EDITION
Definition: A limited edition refers to a set number of prints produced from a single image. Once this number is reached, no more prints are made, ensuring scarcity.
Typical Range: The number can vary but is often between 5 to 50 prints. However, some editions can be larger.
Value: The value of a limited edition print is usually higher than that of an open edition (where prints are made continuously) because the supply is restricted.
Numbering: Each print in a limited edition is usually numbered (e.g., 1/25, 2/25) and sometimes signed by the artist.
EXCLUSIVITY
Each series is composed of a maximum of 18 to 27 artworks. No other artworks from this series will ever be offered for sale. Once an edition for an artwork is sold out, no more prints will ever be available. Once all editions for all artworks in my series are sold out, the entire series will be sold out. This ensures the exclusivity and enduring value of each piece and each series as a whole.
In summary, while both limited and rare editions indicate a finite number of prints, rare editions are more exclusive and scarce, generally making them more valuable. This distinction is important for collectors and galleries as it directly influences the market value and desirability of the prints.
